Trump and Putin Set to Meet This Friday, Here's What You Should Know Beforehand About Alaska and Their Summit
In the heart of Alaska, a region with a rich history of Russian influence, the U.S. and Russia recently held a significant summit in 2025. This meeting carried deep symbolic significance, as the location underscored the intertwined history and ongoing complex relationship between the two countries.
Alaska's connection to Russia dates back to the 18th century when Russian explorers and settlers established "Russian America." The territory remained under Russian control until 1867, when Czar Alexander II sold Alaska to the United States for $7.2 million due to financial strain and overextension caused by the Crimean War.
The transfer of Alaska to the U.S. marked the beginning of a new era for the region. Alaska played a notable role in international tensions, particularly during World War II, when it was the site of the only World War II battle fought on North American soil—the Aleutian Islands campaign between U.S. and Japanese forces.
During the Cold War, Alaska served as a strategic defense point, considered the "first line of defense" against potential Soviet attacks over the North Pole. Military leaders worried about the possibility of Soviet planes flying over the North Pole to drop nuclear weapons, and they built a chain of radar systems connected to an anti-aircraft missile system.
Remnants of Russian influence are still evident in Alaska today, including Russian Orthodox churches, Alaskan Creole communities (descendants of Russians and native peoples), and place names derived from Russian. These elements reflect the legacy of Russian settlement and cultural presence that remain despite the transfer of Alaska to the United States over 150 years ago.
The recent summit in Alaska was not only about addressing the war in Ukraine but also about asserting Russia’s global stature and shaping the future of U.S.-Russia relations. The location underscored Russia’s enduring historical connection and the diplomatic nuances of their interactions.
However, the summit also raised concerns among some observers. Many have raised concerns that Russia might use the summit to argue for territorial changes, citing the historical transfer of Alaska from Russia to the U.S. as an example.
In the modern era, Alaska continues to play a strategic role. The Pentagon has recommended investing more in Arctic sensors, communications, and space-based technologies to counteract China and Russia. The military's early construction of infrastructure in Alaska, including roads and some communities, serves as a foundation for these modern developments.
As the U.S. and Russia navigate their complex relationship, Alaska stands as a testament to their shared history and ongoing connections. The region's unique heritage, forged through centuries of exploration, colonization, and conflict, continues to shape the dynamics of international politics today.
