Russia and the United States are set to hold a highly-anticipated summit on August 15, 2025, in Alaska, marking the first meeting between the two presidents since Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva in June 2021. The focus of the summit will be discussing options for achieving a long-term peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.

China's President Xi Jinping has expressed support for a "long-term" solution to the conflict, while India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China's Xi have both tried to tout their own peace initiatives for Ukraine, though they have gained little traction.

The Kremlin has confirmed the summit, and President Putin has resisted multiple calls for a ceasefire from the United States, Europe, and Kyiv. Putin has maintained a hardline stance, demanding Ukraine's full military and political capitulation as a condition for peace talks.

Russia's current territorial demands in the ongoing negotiations with Ukraine remain unchanged and uncompromising, requiring Ukraine to fully withdraw from the entire regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson oblasts, including some areas not currently occupied by Russian forces. These demands were reaffirmed by Russian officials ahead of the summit and reflect President Vladimir Putin’s June 14, 2024 speech outlining prerequisites for "peace" negotiations.

Aside from territorial concessions, Russia insists on Ukraine’s demilitarization, denazification (including removal of the current Ukrainian government), and future neutrality regarding alliances such as NATO. These demands amount to Ukraine’s full military and political capitulation, with no indication of Russia considering territorial concessions or negotiating its position.

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to cause significant civilian casualties and damage, with ongoing Russian missile and drone strikes. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions have been forced to flee their homes since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Putin has ruled out holding talks with Volodymyr Zelensky at this stage, a meeting the Ukrainian president says is necessary to make headway on a deal. The Kremlin continues to focus exclusively on its defined national interests, deepening political, economic, and military ties with countries like China, despite international condemnation.

In the ongoing international politics and general news, the upcoming summit between Russia and the United States, scheduled for August 15, 2025, in Alaska, is predominantly aimed at discussingoptions for achieving a long-term peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. However, Russia's territorial demands in negotiations with Ukraine, such as the full withdrawal of Ukraine from regions like Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson oblasts, have been met with resistance from various parties, indicating a potential for continued war-and-conflicts.
