Trump and Putin lack the ability to make decisions without Ukraine's involvement, according to Zelensky.

The war in Ukraine, ongoing for nearly three-and-a-half years, may finally see a resolution as President Zelensky expressed confidence that a trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin, and himself will take place to end the conflict.

The scheduled meeting between Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the US state of Alaska is considered important for their bilateral relations. The meeting, planned for this Friday, is intended to address the ongoing war in Ukraine.

However, the prospect of a trilateral summit has raised concerns among Ukraine's European allies and its leadership. There is a fear that Putin and Trump could make decisions about Ukraine without its involvement. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ruled out such decisions, stating unequivocally that no decisions about Ukraine can be made without Ukraine's involvement.

Trump has expressed a desire to end the bloodshed in Ukraine as soon as possible. However, earlier this week, he stated that he would not sign any agreement on the Ukraine war with Putin, as he believes it is not his responsibility.

The Kremlin expresses significant skepticism about the proposed Putin-Zelensky summit for peace talks. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized that any meeting between Putin and Zelensky should be preceded by a "step by step" series of lower-level talks, reflecting Moscow’s longstanding position that leaders could sign an agreement but not open new negotiations directly.

The fundamental issues remain unresolved, particularly around security guarantees and territorial concessions, making the swift peace deal that Trump envisions unlikely at this stage. Putin’s reluctance to meet Zelensky is further complicated by his original war aims, which included Kyiv regime change, and reported assassination attempts on Zelensky in recent years according to Ukrainian security services.

Despite these challenges, the hope remains that the upcoming summit will mark a significant step towards peace in Ukraine. As the conflict continues, the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a resolution that will bring an end to the bloodshed and pave the way for a brighter future for the Ukrainian people.
