The upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15 in the US state of Alaska, will mark the first personal meeting between the two leaders since Joe Biden's meeting with Putin in Geneva in the summer of 2021.

Trump has been vocal about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, often claiming that it began during Biden's term and suggesting that such an escalation would have been unthinkable under his presidency. In response, he has set a deadline of ten days for a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev, threatening sanctions against Russia's trading partners if it is not met.

However, the Kremlin has indicated that a potential meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is contingent upon specific conditions related to Ukraine's military posture and political stance. The Kremlin requires Ukraine to withdraw its forces from four contested regions that Russia has claimed as its own but does not fully control, and to formally renounce any plans to join NATO.

These conditions are framed as prerequisites for any ceasefire and the start of meaningful talks. President Zelensky, who has repeatedly demanded a conversation with Putin, is pushing for a three-way meeting involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States, with the central topic being an immediate ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the U.S.-Russia meeting will proceed, though Zelensky is not participating. The choice of Alaska as the meeting place for the summit was found to be "logical" by Russian President's foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov. If there is another meeting between the two presidents after Alaska, it is likely to take place in Russia, according to Ushakov.

Prior to the summit, US special envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow and spoke personally with Putin for the fifth time. Both sides described the exchange as constructive. However, Trump announced new tariffs against India due to Russia's oil deals with the country, which are set to come into effect in August.

It is uncertain whether there will be a meeting between Putin and Zelensky, as certain conditions for direct talks at the highest level have not yet been met. Trump has stressed the need for direct talks between Moscow and Kiev at the highest level and has repeatedly expressed his desire to quickly end the war in Ukraine.
