In a stalemate that threatens to prolong the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has rejected Russian demands for territorial concessions to end the war in Eastern Ukraine. This rejection comes as President Putin of Russia has proposed that Ukraine unilaterally withdraw from Donetsk Oblast, concede the remainder of unoccupied Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, and recognize occupied Crimea as part of Russia in exchange for a ceasefire and freezing the frontline in Zaporizhia and Kherson oblasts.

The Ukrainian leadership, including President Zelensky, has refused these terms, emphasizing that any territorial decisions must be made by Ukraine itself and that concessions without Ukrainian agreement are unacceptable. This stance has been maintained despite the war-weary population, who have endured relentless Russian attacks for three and a half years.

For Ukraine, conceding territory could mean a significant loss of sovereignty, weakening national unity and security. It also risks setting a precedent for future Russian aggression unless robust international security guarantees are provided, which Ukraine insists are necessary to prevent repeated incursions.

Russia, under President Putin, has persisted with demands for Ukrainian concessions, signalling its insistence on expanding or legitimizing its control over contested regions. However, the persistence of these demands may prolong or complicate conflict resolution. The territorial concessions proposed by Russia would mean surrendering several thousand square kilometers of territory and strategically important cities by the Ukrainian army.

The current status quo has been marked by a stalemate, with Ukrainian defenders holding only a few square kilometers in Luhansk, but in the heavily contested Donetsk region, the Ukrainian army still controls a quarter of the territory. The Dnipro River separates both sides of the regions Saporizhzhia and Kherson, where Russia controls only parts, which it has annexed.

The potential implications for both countries are significant. For Russia, territorial concessions on their part (such as possible withdrawals or freezes in Zaporizhia and Kherson oblasts) have been ambiguously presented and remain unclear or unconfirmed by Western sources. The White House initially mentioned a trilateral meeting with Zelensky after the Trump-Putin summit, but Moscow has invited Trump to a second meeting in Russia, excluding Zelensky.

Meanwhile, Zelensky must hurry to organize political support in his country to prepare for a potential deal. The choice of Alaska as the venue for the Trump-Putin summit has been criticized by Zelenskyy, who has expressed concerns about the potential impact on the negotiations. Trump has hinted at the hurdles posed by Ukraine's constitution as an obstacle to a solution.

Despite these challenges, a peaceful resolution to the conflict remains the desired outcome for both nations. The risk of continued conflict remains unless a mutually acceptable agreement or substantial security guarantees are achieved. The international community continues to watch closely, hoping for a resolution that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
