Trump and Putin deliberate potential land cessions by Ukraine
In a significant development, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are currently engaged in talks in Alaska, aiming to broker a peace deal for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The discussions, which started on August 15, 2025, focus on potential territorial concessions in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Trump has expressed optimism about reaching a peace agreement, suggesting a possible territorial land swap that could formalize Russia's control over certain regions. However, he has emphasized the need for Ukraine to be directly involved in any land-for-peace deal, with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy included in follow-up talks.
Putin, on the other hand, aims to secure international legal recognition of Russia's annexation of Crimea, which occurred in 2014, and the four Ukrainian regions Moscow claims, including Donetsk and Luhansk, requiring Ukraine to withdraw troops fully from these areas.
The negotiations have faced strong resistance from Ukraine and its allies, who insist on Kyiv’s involvement in any negotiations concerning territorial concessions to prevent forced land swaps unfavorable to Ukraine. The Ukrainian population, after three and a half years of relentless Russian attacks, is war-weary, and any ceding of territories would cause severe internal political turmoil.
Trump has set deadlines for Putin to agree to terms, indicating increased pressure with threats of tariffs and sanctions. However, it remains unclear whether Putin will concede to these demands. The summit marks the first direct meeting of Trump and Putin since 2019 and reflects a rare attempt to mediate the ongoing war.
As the negotiations continue, Ukrainian officials remain wary of any pressure to concede territory. Zelensky must hurry to organize political support in his country to prepare for a potential deal. The outcome of these discussions is uncertain, pending the results of these negotiations and potential subsequent talks with Ukraine’s leadership.
