In the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, negotiations for a peace deal have been ongoing, with a focus on territorial concessions by Ukraine.

Reports suggest that the primary proposed territorial concessions by Ukraine involve ceding control of the entire Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, also known as the Donbas region, to Russia. This region includes territory currently held by Russia and some still under Ukrainian control, such as the "fortress belt" of settlements like Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, which have functioned as Ukraine's main defensive line.

Russia demands these concessions as conditions for a ceasefire and peace deal, including freezing frontlines in other contested regions like Kherson and Zaporizhia oblasts. From Russia’s perspective, these territorial demands are non-negotiable, and the Kremlin insists on Ukraine formally relinquishing sovereignty over these areas.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and widespread public opinion reject surrendering any part of the Donbas or Crimea, citing the long history of conflict and Russia's repeated violations of past agreements. Most Ukrainians remain unwilling to accept territorial losses, fearing such moves would imperil Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.

Negotiations have reportedly included talks about Ukraine adopting a neutral status and security guarantees, but territorial concessions remain the main sticking point. Although there is speculation that Russia might offer some concessions elsewhere, the focus remains on Ukraine’s giving up the Donbas and Crimea.

Trump, in a recent statement, pointed to the hurdles of the Ukrainian constitution as an obstacle to a solution. The Ukrainian population is war-weary after three and a half years of constant Russian attacks, but ceding territory would cause severe internal political turmoil.

A summit between Trump and Putin is confirmed to take place on August 15 in Alaska. However, the White House initially mentioned a trilateral meeting with Zelensky following a Trump-Putin summit, but Moscow has since invited Trump for a second meeting in Russia, excluding Zelensky.

Meanwhile, Russian soldiers also appear to have crossed the border into the Dnipropetrovsk region, adding a new dimension to the ongoing conflict. The potential exchange could refer to small Russian army bridgeheads in Ukrainian frontline areas of Sumy and Kharkiv.

Through its conquests in the south, Russia has created a land bridge to the Crimean Peninsula, which it annexed in 2014. The wide Dnipro River separates the two sides of the regions of Saporizhzhia and Kherson, which Russia is reported to control.

The ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, a topic of general news, remains unresolved due to the non-negotiable territorial demands by Russia, with Ukraine's proposed concessions involving ceding control of the Donbas region, a focus of war-and-conflicts.

Disagreements over territorial concessions, specifically the Donbas and Crimea, are hindering peace talks, as both sides hold strong politics surrounding these regions, escalating the ongoing tensions.
