Trump and Putin convene in Alaska for a pivotal discussion aiming to terminate the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, a controversial proposal for territorial and economic exchanges has emerged. The Russian Ministry of Defense recently claimed the capture of the town of Yablunivka in the Donetsk region, adding another layer of complexity to the negotiations.

The Russian offensive, initiated in February 2022, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and immense destruction. Amidst the chaos, Ukraine has proposed a new meeting with Russia next week, aiming to put an end to the killings.

The proposed deal, reportedly prepared by former U.S. President Donald Trump, involves economic concessions that include access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals, some of which are located in Russian-held territories of Ukraine. These minerals, including lithium deposits in the areas controlled by Russia, would be granted to Russia, along with economic incentives linked to Alaska’s natural resources. The proposal may also involve lifting some sanctions on Russia’s aircraft industry.

This plan is part of a broader initiative aimed at ending the war in Ukraine through peace negotiations involving territorial and economic compromises. However, Ukrainians remain skeptical about the likelihood of such a deal leading to peace, especially since some of the minerals at stake lie in Russian-held zones and Russia's claims to these resources complicate Ukraine's territorial sovereignty.

The upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin will take place in the state of Alaska, a location described as "logical" by Russian authorities due to the shared border and economic interests between the U.S. and Russia in Alaska and the Arctic. It's important to note that the U.S. has not ratified the treaty to be a member of the International Criminal Court, allowing Putin to step on U.S. soil without risk of arrest.

The last meetings between Trump and Putin took place in a pre-war setting, including a G20 summit in Japan in June 2019 and a bilateral summit in Helsinki on July 16, 2018. The last round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine ended in July without agreements to achieve peace, but agreed on a new prisoner exchange.

The expansionist and economic ambitions of Russia and the U.S. have also been pointing towards the Arctic, where Greenland and the rest of the region harbor important mineral, oil, and gas reserves. As the world watches, the future developments in this conflict remain uncertain.

The proposed deal, involving political negotiations and economic concessions, includes the exchange of access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals for concessions on Alaska’s natural resources, as reported by The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Amidst the war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, general news outlets have raised concerns that the deal may compromise Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty due to the minerals at stake being located in Russian-held zones.
