Trump and Putin confer in Anchorage, Alaska
The much-anticipated U.S.-Russia summit is scheduled to take place in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025. The main topic of discussion will be Russia's aggression against Ukraine, with a focus on the ongoing conflict in Donbass and regional security concerns.
The announcement was made by Karoline Leavitt, the spokesperson for the U.S. President. The U.S. President, Donald Trump, is set to depart for the summit on Friday. The Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, will also attend the summit.
The meeting will take place in Anchorage, the largest city of Alaska, the northernmost state of the United States. Located in southern Alaska, Anchorage serves as a strategic location bridging North America and Asia, symbolising hopes for renewed bilateral cooperation not only on Ukraine but also on other issues such as Arctic collaboration and international security.
The detailed agenda for the summit includes reviewing the status of the Ukraine conflict, especially the situation in Donbass. Negotiations will centre around pathways for peace talks with Ukraine and the European Union’s involvement. Discussions will also focus on the prospects of easing economic sanctions on Russia as incentives.
Regional security and broader geopolitical challenges related to U.S.-Russia relations will also be addressed. Potential cooperation in areas beyond the Ukraine conflict, including Arctic and space exploration interests, will be explored.
Despite the ambitions, the summit concludes without a firm agreement on a ceasefire or immediate resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, reflecting the complexity and ongoing tension between the parties.
Both leaders seek a results-oriented dialogue, with President Trump expressing a clear vision for his goals, while acknowledging Russia's national interests. The meeting aims to explore avenues for conflict resolution and restoring pragmatic cooperation between the two nations.
A one-on-one meeting between President Trump and Putin is planned, and the meeting schedule details are still being worked out. The White House has confirmed the meeting, which is scheduled for Friday morning (local time).
