Trump and Putin are set to converse in Alaska on the following Friday
In the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, 2025, the core territorial demand from Russia has been revealed. Putin seeks the formal recognition and control of the entire eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, a move that would significantly alter Ukraine's political landscape.
This demand, first proposed during the 2025 Alaska meeting, also includes the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Zaporizhia and Kherson oblasts, areas not yet under Russian occupation. Additionally, Putin is pushing for Ukraine's demilitarization, a political overhaul, and a guaranteed neutral status, potentially barring NATO membership.
Interestingly, Putin seems willing to trade some territories currently held by Russian troops outside Donetsk and Luhansk in exchange for the formal recognition of these key regions. However, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has ruled out formally ceding any Ukrainian territory to Russia.
The U.S. President, on the other hand, reportedly backs an effort to negotiate this deal. The negotiations, however, have not been successful so far, with three rounds failing to bear fruit.
The conflict in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has taken a heavy toll on the region. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, and millions have been forced to flee their homes. The fighting has also resulted in widespread destruction, with Russian bombardments destroying swathes of eastern and southern Ukraine.
Notably, Putin has resisted multiple calls for a ceasefire from the United States, Europe, and Kyiv. The Kremlin has remained firm in its stance, emphasizing Russia’s continued military and political objectives for a full Ukrainian capitulation aligned with these territorial and political demands.
In a bid to find a long-term solution to the conflict, Putin held consultations with the leaders of China and India ahead of the summit with Trump. Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed support for Russia and the US maintaining contact and promoting a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, the situation remains tense. Donetsk governor Vadym Filashkin announced that families with children will be evacuated from 19 more villages in the region's east due to advancing Russian forces.
Despite the challenges, both Xi and Modi have tried to tout their own peace initiatives for Ukraine, but they have gained little traction. The Alaska summit between Trump and Putin will be the first between sitting US and Russian presidents since Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva in June 2021.
