Trump and Putin are arranging a meeting in Alaska with the aim of resolving the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

The U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet in Alaska on Friday, with the focus on discussing a potential resolution to the ongoing Ukraine conflict. However, the proposed agreement, which centres around a "swapping of territories" as a basis for peace, has been met with swift rejection by Ukrainian officials.

According to reports, the Russian proposal involves significant territorial concessions from Ukraine, potentially allowing Russia to retain full control of Luhansk, Donetsk, and Crimea. The proposal also demands international legal recognition of Russia's annexation of these territories, a demand that Ukraine has vehemently opposed.

Trump has hinted that the talks could involve a "trade of certain territories," suggesting that the proposed territorial exchange could be mutually beneficial. However, the proposal does not seem to offer any mutual benefits for Ukraine, raising concerns about the fairness of the deal.

Experts have noted that for any peace to be realistic, Russia must be convinced that it cannot win this war. While Trump has threatened harsher economic measures and supports selling U.S. aid for Ukraine through Europe, there are concerns that his engagement with Putin—who is wanted by the International Criminal Court—risks weakening global opposition to Russia.

The key question remains whether Trump will confront Putin firmly enough, including possible economic embargoes that would severely impact Russia, to make the peace effort credible. The details on how such a ceasefire would be secured were not provided in the proposal.

The meeting is intended to discuss an agreement to end the Ukraine conflict, but the proposal does not indicate any changes in Russia's control of Luhansk, Donetsk, or Crimea. Moreover, the proposal does not suggest any genuine land swap, where Ukraine gains Russian territory, and Ukraine would not regain any territories in the proposed talks, according to the report.

Putin is seeking global recognition of his claims in exchange for a ceasefire, a demand that has been met with scepticism. The proposal does not specify how the ceasefire would be enforced, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the potential resolution.

As the two leaders prepare for their meeting, the broader strategy and negotiations remain fraught, with many questioning whether economic and military pressures on Russia will be sufficient to end the conflict. The stakes are high, and the world watches on with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this long-standing conflict.
