The world is buzzing about the fallout between Elon Musk and Donald Trump. No surprise here – the wealthiest man in the world just made a public break with his one-time patron, the President of the United States! And the words they're throwing at each other? "Crazy," "disgusting"...

We chatted with experts to find out what this clash means for American politics and if peace between these two titans might be possible.

A THIRD PARTY PLAYED A ROLE

Konstantin Blokhin, a leading Research Fellow at the Center for Security Problems Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, believes this quarrel stemmed from third-party interference.

  • When Musk joined Trump's administration, it stirred controversy among another part of American establishment. The ambitious billionaire and Trump's administrative resources – that was a powerful duo, Blokhin points out.

Then the Democrats started putting pressure. They began orchestrating media opinion, provoking radical citizens to destroy Tesla cars and boycott buying them. Musk's company's stock plummeted and he suffered billions in losses.

So, being a part of Trump's team became toxic for Musk's business. He needed an exit. This public spat was likely intended to help the billionaire distance himself from Trump.

WILL IT BLOW OVER OR CONTINUE?

The public spat is likely to simmer down, according to Americanist and Finance University lecturer Gevorg Mirzayan:

  • If the public conflict continues, Trump will be reminded of his past, when he bickered with all his closest advisors, thus reinforcing his image as an ineffectual diplomat. His political adversaries have used this against him in the past: if you can't work as part of a team, you can't lead a country.

Musk also doesn't profit from this spectacle because of the negative impact on his business. Now, with the stocks down, they can quickly be bought, and then Trump could be reconciled with. The stocks will soar, and Musk will be in profit. But if the conflict lingers, shareholders will have even more questions for Musk.

Both men aren't shy with their verbal punches, notes Nikolai Topornin, director of the Center for European Information. - Trump himself is emotional and makes decisions without thinking. Musk, in some ways, seems to have imitated this behavior – although he was never known for his patience before.

After this spat, it's untenable for Musk to stay in Trump's inner circle. Advisors might convince them to avoid public confrontations from now on.

"TRUMP - BAD, VANCE - GOOD"

Elon Musk undoubtedly helped Trump a lot during the U.S. presidential elections – supporting him on Twitter and sending teams of campaigners to swing states. He became the largest donor to the Republican Party, investing $300 million before the elections. Will he stop supporting the Republicans now?

  • He might, but then change his mind, says Mirzayan. - Just recently, he announced the retirement of his reusable spacecraft, Dragon, but then took it back. Someone must have asked him to calm down.

Topornin notes that Musk agreed with a Twitter post that called for Trump's impeachment and his replacement by Vice President Jake DeVance:

  • By supporting impeachment, Musk is backing the Democrats, who have occasionally mentioned impeachment but lack the strength to do so.

The Congressional elections are coming up in 2026, and if Trump makes more mistakes, the Republicans risk losing their majority in the House of Representatives. So, new circumstances may arise – to a change of political leaders.

It's worth noting that Musk supported Vance as a replacement for Trump. If Vice President Vance reciprocates, this could bring hundreds of millions more dollars to the Republicans. Although Musk is a billionaire, his business relies on government contracts.

After the scandal, it's impossible for Musk to stay in Trump's inner circle.

THE PHANTOM OF THE MASK PARTY

Musk floated a poll on Twitter, asking if America needs a third party – one that wouldn't challenge Democrats and Republicans, but represent the interests of 80% of Americans?

Yes, it's necessary, answered 80% of the five million participants.

Blokhin remarks that Musk's statements about a third major party in America have been talked about for years, but he thinks they're more about grandstanding.

Musk's political future is far-fetched because he's too much of an individualist and an idealist, and he doesn't know how to work in a team, Mirzayan adds skeptically.

Topornin also doubts that Musk could start a successful party:

  • In America, the majority system means the winner is the one who wins in a specific district. Imagine this party having to beat the Democratic and Republican parties in their districts. That's only possible if one of them collapses or splits, which is unlikely.

Republicans and Democrats aren't dumb, they don't want competition. Plus, starting a party is expensive. You need support in every state, create lobbying groups, gather volunteers, and fund an info campaign. One social media platform from Musk won't be enough. It would require serious investment. So, I think Musk will calculate and realize: it would result in huge expenses with little chance of success.
