Trump and Melania Trump pay respects at Queen Elizabeth's burial site
During a significant state visit to the United Kingdom, President Trump and the First Lady were greeted at St. George's Chapel by the Dean of Windsor, the Rt. Rev. Christopher Cocksworth, and the Chapter Clerk, Charlotte Manley.
The visit to the chapel, famously the location for Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding in 2018, followed an exchange of gifts between the hosts and guests. Victoria Murphy, Contributing Editor at Town & Country, reported that the President received a Union Flag that had flown above Buckingham Palace on the day of his inauguration, as well as a Tiffany & Co. Vintage 18K Gold, Diamond & Ruby Flower Brooch. Melania was presented with a silver bowl by a Northern Irish designer and a personalized Anya Hindmarch handbag. The Presidential couple also gifted a replica of a President Eisenhower Sword to their hosts.
A rare private moment amidst the ceremony of the day's events was the wreath-laying at the grave of Queen Elizabeth in St. George's Chapel, where King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and her parents, George VI and Queen Elizabeth, are buried. The King George VI Memorial Chapel was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth in 1962 as a burial place for herself and her family.
Princess Margaret's ashes are also in the King George VI Memorial Chapel. The St. George's Chapel was the location for Queen Elizabeth's burial service in 2022 and Prince Philip's funeral in 2021.
During his 2025 state visit, US President Donald Trump was received at St. George's Chapel by members of the royal family, but there is no information that he was personally gifted a person during this visit. He laid a wreath at Queen Elizabeth II's tomb and was hosted with a royal program, but no mention of a personal gift in form of a person is recorded.
King Charles, then Prince of Wales, gave Trump a bespoke, hand bound leather volume to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The replica of the President Eisenhower Sword symbolizes profound respect and serves as a reminder of the historical partnership that was critical to winning World War II.
Trump described his visit to St. George's Chapel as a 'great honor.' The State Visit for the Trumps has seen the largest military welcome in living memory for a visiting head of state, though the involvement of U.S. and U.K. F-35 fighter jets in the flyover was cancelled due to the weather.
This visit to St. George's Chapel not only showcases the historical ties between the United States and the United Kingdom but also the enduring tradition and significance of the British Royal Family.
