Trade Tussle: Trump and China Engage in Trade Dispute - Trump and China engaged in a contentious exchange

Let the cat and mouse game continue! The trade beef between the U.S. and China is heating up yet again, as both nations continue to lob barbs at each other. After Trump slammed China for failing to honor trade agreements made in Geneva a fortnight ago, Beijing has hit back with stern criticism against the U.S.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, since the Geneva talks, the U.S. has implemented additional discriminatory restrictions, including tightening the reins on AI chip sales and limiting access to chip design software, as well as revoking visas for Chinese students in the USA. The ministry accused the U.S. of deflecting blame and failing to acknowledge its own misconduct.

The Donald accuses China

The trade debate between China and the U.S. had reached a tentative truce in mid-May during a summit in Switzerland. Both countries agreed to a temporary reduction in tariffs for a 90-day period, with the U.S. tariff on Chinese imports plummeting from 145% to 30%, and China's tariff on U.S. imports dropping from 125% to 10%.

Dubbing this a crucial milestone, Trump asserted that China had finally agreed to his demands. However, those rose-tinted glasses have been shattered, as the U.S. government's tone towards China has become increasingly belligerent. In a fiery post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that China had flagrantly violated the agreement, lamenting, "So much for being Mr. Nice Guy!" The specific violation remains unclear in Trump's diatribe.

Direct communication?

Reports suggest that while China did lower tariffs as promised, other trade impediments, such as restrictions on rare earth exports, still persist. Fuelling the controversy, Trump flatly stated that China had breached a large portion of the agreement. However, he expressed optimism about engaging with Chinese President Xi Jinping to find a solution. No confirmation of such a conversation has been received from the Chinese government as of yet.
