US-China Trade Flare-Up: Is the Deal at Risk Again? - Trump and Xi Exchange Verbal Blows

Tensions escalate over trade agreement: Trump and China clash verbally - Trump and China engage in a contentious dispute

Whoa, the ongoing trade war between China and the United States just got spicier! Both parties have once again thrown loaded statements at each other. Following President Donald Trump’s accusation against China for not holding up their end of the deal made in Geneva nearly two weeks ago, the Chinese government has launched a biting retort at the US.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has slammed the US, stating that they have been passing on more unfair trade restrictions since the Geneva talks. The ministry highlighted specific measures such as tightening controls on the sale of AI chips and chip design software to China, as well as questioning the decision to cancel visas for Chinese students in the US.

In response to this, the US side has been accused of shifting the blame instead of taking a hard look at its own actions.

Trump's Claims

The US and China came to a tentative agreement on trade relations during a meetup in May in Switzerland, aiming to temporarily lower tariffs. The joint statement from the two economic titans proposed a 125% reduction in tariffs, lowering US tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, and Chinese tariffs on US imports from 125% to 10%.

President Trump considered this a significant move toward opening up China, but recent remarks from the US government take on a harder tone towards China. Trump took to his Truth Social platform to blast China, claiming that China had violated the agreement in its entirety. He didn’t specify what the breach was.

Direct Dialogue?

According to reports, US diplomats have stated that although China has reduced tariffs as agreed, other trade barriers like rare earth export restrictions still remain a problem.

Later that day, at a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump stated that China had violated a significant part of the agreement, suggesting that he would be talking to President Xi Jinping soon. However, there has been no official confirmation from Beijing about the scheduled conversation.
