Trump Calls for 30-Day Ukraine Ceasefire, Threatens Sanctions Against Russia

Trump advocates for a 30-day halt in conflicts and warns of financial repercussions if peace is not upheld.

In a bold move, US President Donald Trump has demanded a 30-day ceasefire in Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine. Trump voiced his appeal on his Truth Social platform, stating, "The US calls for a 30-day, unconditional ceasefire." Both countries must adhere to this ceasefire, and any failure to do so will result in further sanctions from the US and its partners.

Trump's post follows a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The president's tone was measured, stating, "As President, I will continue to work with Europeans for lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine." He added that quick peace talks could be possible with a successful ceasefire. Trump offered his services "at any time if needed."

Selenskyj, too, has expressed his readiness for a 30-day ceasefire. In a social media post, he stated, "Ukraine is ready for a 30-day ceasefire, even today." He also assured Trump that Ukraine is open to talks "in any format." However, Selenskyj emphasized that to commence negotiations, Moscow must first demonstrate its commitment to ending the war, and an unconditional ceasefire is the first step.

The proposed ceasefire agreement is part of a broader Ukraine-US resource agreement, which was signed at the end of April and amended at Ukraine's request. The agreement pertains to the joint exploitation of oil, gas, and minerals in Ukraine. This agreements ratification by the Ukrainian parliament was confirmed on Thursday evening.

Despite ongoing efforts for a ceasefire, challenges remain due to Russia's unwillingness to agree to a peace deal. US special envoy to Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg, stated on May 6, 2025, that Russian President Vladimir Putin's refusal to accept a 30-day ceasefire is the main obstacle to peace. Kellogg pointed out that Russia is not currently making significant gains in the war, noting setbacks such as failure to secure strategic positions in the Kherson Oblast and high attrition rates among Russian forces. Kellogg also explained that Ukraine is ready to immediately sign the ceasefire agreement and is willing to accept a "ceasefire in place."

In response to Russia's reluctance, a coalition led by the UK and France, dubbed the "Coalition of the Willing," plans to deploy a "ceasefire force" west of the Dnipro River to patrol and uphold the ceasefire terms. However, the Kremlin denies receiving any official proposals from Ukraine regarding the establishment of such a demilitarized zone.

In summary, while the international community, led by the US, continues to advocate for a structured ceasefire initiative, Russia's resistance towards these terms stalls meaningful progress in the negotiations. The main points of contention include the establishment of a demilitarized zone and Russia's demands for excessive concessions.
