Trump Holds Strong on 30-Day Ceasefire Demand, Warns of Sanctions if Russia Fails to Comply
Trump advocates for a 30-day cessation of hostilities and hints at imposing economic penalties
In a bold move, US President Donald Trump has taken a firm stance, calling for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Addressing the issue on his Truth Social platform, Trump made it clear that both nations would be held accountable for maintaining the ceasefire, hinting at severe consequences if its terms are not met.
"Yo, Russian boys, we're asking for a solid month-long pause in this war mess," Trump declared, using informal language typical of his social media interactions. He added ominously, "If the ceasefire ain't respected, y'all can expect some fresh sanctions from the US and our partners."
The post followed discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Trump expressed his continued commitment to work alongside Europeans for permanent peace between Russia and Ukraine.
Selenskyj, too, shared optimistic sentiments, announcing on his social media channels that Ukraine is prepared for a 30-day ceasefire, even starting today. However, he emphasized that prior to negotiations, Moscow must demonstrate its intent to end the conflict once and for all by adopting an unconditional ceasefire.
The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been marked by numerous twists and turns, with recent developments shedding uncertainty on the fate of a potential ceasefire. In the face of Russia's refusal to agree to a ceasefire and its escalation of military operations, diplomatic progress seems challenging but not impossible.

Selenskyj's call with Trump also revolved around the Ukraine-US resource agreement, which was painstakingly negotiated and recently ratified by the Ukrainian parliament. This agreement concerns the joint exploration and production of oil, gas, and minerals in Ukraine, signifying a significant diplomatic success for Kiev.
Historical Perspective The Manipulation of "Victory Day"
Previously, the agreement was set to be signed in February during Selenskyj's visit to Washington. Although the agreement was eventually signed, the visit was marred by a diplomatic incident when Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly accused Selenskyj of disrespect and ingratitude for US military aid in front of the cameras.
Initially, Ukraine expected the US to provide a security guarantee against future Russian attacks in exchange for preferential access to Ukrainian resources. However, the US declined this offer, making the signed agreement an important diplomatic victory for Kiev despite the setbacks.
