Trump Administration Permanently Halts Biden Administration's Crusade Against Gun Retailers
In recent developments, governors in Kansas and Virginia have signed a series of pro-gun bills into law, marking a significant shift in gun policies in these states.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed two bills on April 7, one of which, HB 1222, allows permit holders to store firearms in their vehicles on school grounds. Another bill, SB 137, authorises the state to sell seized and forfeited guns to federally licensed firearm dealers for resale.
Meanwhile, in Virginia, Governor Glenn Youngkin vetoed 24 anti-gun bills in March. One of the bills he signed, HB 2052, allows individuals to update their provisional concealed-carry license to a standard license upon reaching the age of 21. Another bill, SB 100, allows enhanced permit holders to carry on the campus of a state institution of higher education.
HB 1218, signed by South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden, prohibits political subdivisions from restricting concealed carry on properties they own or lease for employees, officers, and volunteers. It also repeals 'gun-free' zones at eateries and establishments that serve alcohol.
The Trump administration announced reviews of two anti-gun administrative rules from the prior administration. One review concerns the status of braced pistols under the National Firearms Act (NFA), while the other focuses on who is required to become an FFL to sell guns.
The revocation of the 'zero-tolerance' policy signalled a significant pro-gun shift by the Trump administration. This policy, which targeted 'willful' violations of a specified list of infractions, had been costing small businesspeople their livelihoods over harmless clerical errors in gun sale paperwork.
In a move to further support Second Amendment rights, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the creation of a Second Amendment Task Force at the Department of Justice on April 9. The Second Amendment Oversight Commission, consisting of members from law enforcement, legal experts, and Second Amendment advocacy groups, was also announced by Attorney General Pam Bondi in April 2021.
John Commerford, executive director of NRA-ILA, praised Governor Youngkin for upholding his promise to protect Second Amendment rights. NRA members and Second Amendment supporters are encouraged to visit nrapvf.org to learn about races in their area for the upcoming election in Virginia.
In addition, Governor Rhoden previously signed SB 81, preventing the use of firearm-specific merchant category codes, and HB 2052, which enacted a mandatory waiting period for firearm possession and banned a wide range of commonly owned firearms, was vetoed.
As these developments unfold, it is clear that the debate over gun rights and regulations continues to be a hot topic in politics across the United States.
