Trump and Putin Set to Meet Amidst Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

According to reports from The New York Post and other media outlets, President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, 2025, in Alaska. This meeting will precede any talks involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The announcement of the meeting comes amid ongoing frustration over the prolonged conflict in Ukraine, with Trump’s administration seeking an opening for peace talks. The meeting is expected to be a significant development in U.S.-Russia relations, marking Putin's first visit to the U.S. since 2015.

Trump has expressed a preference to "start off with Russia" and later hopes to hold a trilateral meeting with Putin and Zelenskyy, although currently, the meeting is only bilateral as per Putin's request. Vladimir Putin stated on August 7 that he has no objection to meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in principle.

The discussions are expected to focus heavily on achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine, reflecting both leaders' interests in resolving the conflict. Putin's assistant Yuri Ushakov stated that an agreement has been reached to hold a meeting between Putin and Trump, although the location for the meeting has been agreed upon but not yet named.

Trump's special envoy recently met Putin in Moscow, indicating a possible shift towards dialogue. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described the meeting as a test of how serious Putin is about peace. Trump's potential new anti-Russia sanctions depend on Moscow's actions, while Putin considers one of the most suitable places for his meeting with Trump to be the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

However, Putin emphasized that certain conditions must be created for such talks, and he noted that a meeting with Zelensky and Trump is still far off. The meeting between Trump and Putin remains a crucial step towards resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and improving U.S.-Russia relations.
