"War's a difficult battle" - Trump's heartfelt conversation with Zelensky amid Ukraine conflict

In the heart of the Netherlands, a gathering of numerous heads of state emphasized the need for increased defense spending. Amidst this backdrop, a warmer relationship seemed to blossom between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump voiced his suspicion that Russian leader Vladimir Putin may harbor territorial ambitions beyond Ukraine, during a press conference concluding the NATO summit in The Hague. He revealed plans for another phone call with Putin shortly.

The US-Ukrainian summit appeared amicable, with Trump remarking, "We had a great meeting. It was wonderful, absolutely lovely." He showed empathy for Zelensky's plight, saying, "He's waging a tough war here." Trump even expressed a desire to speak with Putin regarding a possible end to the war, stating, "I believe it's a good time to put an end to it. I'll speak to Vladimir Putin to see if we can bring this to an end."

Trump had earlier noted Zelensky to be an "awkward conversation partner." He acknowledged the heavy toll on both sides, with many casualties. However, Trump admitted that ending the war was more challenging than he initially thought, stating, "War's a difficult battle, Putin's a tough nut."

Zelensky also shared a "long and substantial meeting" with Trump. Both leaders discussed options for achieving a ceasefire and a "just peace." Zelensky thanked Trump for his attention and expressed his willingness to bring peace closer. The discussion also revolved around drones coproduction, with Zelensky mentioning potential partnerships between the two nations. First and foremost, they talked about the possibility of Ukraine purchasing US air defense systems.

At the press conference, Trump took a moment to inquire about a Ukrainian journalist's personal situation. She had initially questioned military aid for Ukraine, and when she shared her Ukrainian origin, Trump asked if she was currently residing in Ukraine. Upon learning she was living in Warsaw with her children but her husband was there, serving as a soldier, Trump responded empathetically, "That's tough." He recognized her emotion and invited her to relay a message to her husband.

This was the second meeting between Trump and Zelensky following their strained encounter in the White House in February. Trump, who now lauded Zelensky highly, stated, "We had a rough go of it." However, they met again on the sidelines of Pope Francis's funeral in the Vatican in April.
