Trump acknowledges Ukraine conflict to be more intricate than anticipated, voicing disappointment towards Putin for perceived disappointments

In a recent joint press appearance in the UK with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, former US President Donald Trump expressed his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump had previously emphasised using personal diplomacy and pressure to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia.

Trump's hopes were pinned on his personal relationship with Putin, believing it would make ending the war in Ukraine easier. However, several deadlines and calls for ceasefires or peace proposals have passed without concrete results.

Early in 2022, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett facilitated communication between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Putin, coordinating closely with leaders from the US, Germany, France, and the UK to negotiate a ceasefire. Later, in June 2023, a delegation led by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and African Union Chair Azali Assoumani attempted direct talks with both parties using a ten-point peace plan. Yet, this peace plan was rejected by Zelensky and Putin.

Trump proposed a strategy to lower Russia's revenue from oil exports as a means to influence negotiations. He argued that if Europe and NATO reduced or halted purchases of Russian energy, it would force leverage in negotiations. Trump also linked solving the conflict to lowering Russia's revenue from oil exports.

Despite these efforts, no specific concrete results have been achieved in the negotiations so far. Trump had earlier proposed direct meetings involving Zelensky, Russia, and US-mediated talks. However, these proposals have yet to materialise into tangible progress.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, Trump's persistent push for peace remains unrealised, leaving many to wonder if a resolution can be found in the near future.
