Trump acclaims "highest accolade" in grand banquet speech, following a stunning day of state visit festivities
During his second state visit to the UK, former President Donald Trump was treated to a grand affair, filled with historical significance and modern touches.
On the first day of the visit, Trump and his wife Melania were given a tour of items from the Royal Collection relating to the US, including a letter from President Abraham Lincoln to Queen Victoria, which was described as a "defining moment" in the special relationship between the UK and the US.
The highlight of the evening was a state dinner, where a 1945 vintage port was served in recognition of Trump's role as the 45th and 47th president of the United States. A Hennessy 1912 Cognac Grande Champagne was also offered, in recognition of Trump's mother's birth year.
The state banquet was not without its unique touches. A bespoke transatlantic whisky sour cocktail was served, incorporating Johnnie Walker Black and marmalade, a tradition started by King Charles III, with a new cocktail created for each state dinner. The King of Great Britain emphasized the connection between the kingdom and the USA in a special edition project in 2022.
Trump expressed his bond with America and the UK as priceless and eternal. He described the visit as "one of the highest honours" of his life and praised King Charles III in his speech, calling him a "very, very special man." Trump also mentioned the Prince of Wales and the "beautiful" Princess of Wales.
However, the visit was not without protests. Thousands of people demonstrated against Trump's state visit in London, with activists from the Stop Trump Coalition marching from central London's Portland Place towards Whitehall. The coalition, consisting of over 50 unions and charities, includes climate activists, anti-racism, and pro-Palestine campaigners.
The event was attended by figures such as Rupert Murdoch, Sir Keir Starmer, Tim Cook, Kemi Badenoch, and Sam Altman. King Charles III also made a light-hearted reference to nearly being "married off" to the Nixon family in 1970.
During the visit, Trump boasted about the economic success of the US, stating that the country is "doing unbelievably well." He also highlighted Charles's passions, including the environment and architecture. Trump spent around 10 minutes privately at the late Queen Elizabeth II's final resting place during the first day of their state visit.
The visit concluded with Trump expressing his gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality he and Melania received during their stay in the UK.
