Trump abrupts firm migration policy

In a surprising turn of events, President Donald Trump appears to be softening his stance on immigration following industry complaints about his aggressive policies. Agriculture, hotels, and restaurants have reportedly reached out to the President, voicing concerns over his hardline approach, leading to a potential policy shift.

According to a recent report by the “New York Times,” Trump's government has altered its focus in the fight for mass deportations. The report cites unnamed US officials and an internal email, stating that officials at the immigration agency ICE have been instructed to mostly halt raids and arrests in agricultural businesses, hotels, and restaurants. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed this new directive.

Despite continuing investigations into human trafficking, money laundering, and drug smuggling, the report indicates that "non-criminal associates" will be spared from arrests. The letter is attributed to leading ICE official Tatum King and was sent to the regional offices of the immigration agency.

Protests against Trump's tough immigration policy and against immigration enforcement officers have been ongoing for about a week.

Trump's order to mobilize thousands of National Guard soldiers and send hundreds of Marines to California has stirred up controversy. During the election campaign, Trump had promised the largest deportation program in American history.

On Thursday, Trump surprisingly adopted a more self-critical tone. "[Our] great farmers and people in the hotel and leisure sector have explained that our very aggressive immigration policy is taking away their very good, long-term workers," Trump stated on Truth Social. He added that these workers, though not citizens, have proven themselves to be "great" and cannot be sent packing just because they lack the proper documentation.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, confirmed the "New York Times" report. "We will follow the president's instructions and continue to work to remove the worst of the worst criminal aliens from America's streets," she said.

The new directive from President Trump's administration indicates a shift in focus towards halting raids and arrests in sectors like agriculture, hotels, and restaurants, as outlined in an internal email by ICE official Tatum King. This change in policy comes after repeated concerns raised by restaurateurs, hoteliers, and farmers over Trump's immigration policy.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, ongoing protests against Trump's tough immigration policy have grown into a contentious issue, with residents residing without legal documentation increasingly affected by the measures. Despite this, Trump has recently displayed a more lenient stance towards immigrant workers deemed as "great" and essential for industries like agriculture, hotels, and restaurants, even though they lack proper documentation.
