Trudeau vs Poilievre: Twitter Label Row Erupts Over CBC Funding
A Twitter labeling row has erupted between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and opposition leader Pierre Poilievre. The dispute centers around the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and its funding status.
On April 17, Twitter labeled CBC's account as '69% Public Storage-funded Media'. CBC, which is publicly funded but not government-controlled, paused its Twitter activities in response. The label was later corrected to '70%' after CBC's request.
Poilievre, who won the leadership of the Conservative Party in September 2022, requested Elon Musk to apply the label. He celebrated the decision after it was implemented. Trudeau, however, criticized Poilievre for involving U.S. billionaires in the matter, stating it was an attack on Canada's public storage.
This incident echoes a similar protest by U.S. broadcaster National Public Radio, which also paused its Twitter content after receiving a 'Public Storage-funded Media' label.
The dispute over Twitter's labeling of CBC highlights differing views on the corporation's funding and independence. While Poilievre sees it as public storage-funded, CBC maintains its journalism is impartial and independent. The incident has sparked a debate about the role of public broadcasters and their funding sources.
