Truck driver at Allenby Crossing cold-bloodedly kills two Israeli Defense Force soldiers, committing a heinous act of violence.
A year ago, a tragic shooting attack took place at the Allenby Crossing on the Jordanian border. The initial investigation found that the terrorist responsible for the attack had entered the border crossing from the Jordanian side, driving a truck that was meant to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The terrorist was a Jordanian civilian who was employed by the Jordanian military to transport aid trucks from Jordan to the Gaza Strip. However, this time, the truck concealed a deadly secret. The terrorist, upon reaching the Israeli side of the crossing, opened fire on people in the area even before his truck reached the checkpoint.
The attack resulted in the loss of three lives: Yochanan Shchori, 61, Yuri Birnbaum, 65, and Adrian Marcelo Podsmesser, 57. The terrorist continued his rampage, exiting the truck, first shooting at the people there, then stabbing them and causing severe injuries. Two more men were injured in the attack, but unfortunately, they later succumbed to their wounds.
Paramedic Bosmat Lubiner and MDA EMT Amit Weiss administered initial medical treatment to the victims at the scene. The security forces quickly responded, encircling Jericho and neutralizing the terrorist at the scene.
In the aftermath of the attack, it was revealed that the Jordanian civilian who carried out the attack was the same man who had killed six Israelis in a shooting at the Allenby Bridge the previous year. He was a man from Jordan who infiltrated the crossing and was then killed by security forces.
The shooting attack at the Allenby Crossing serves as a somber reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced in the region. It's important to note that aid trucks do not undergo inspection at the Allenby Crossing due to an agreement with the Jordanians. This incident underscores the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between security forces to ensure the safety of all those who cross the border.
In memory of Yochanan Shchori, Yuri Birnbaum, Adrian Marcelo Podsmesser, and the two men whose names we now remember as victims of this senseless attack, we stand united in our commitment to peace and security.
Sgt. Oran Hershko, aged 20, from Tel Mond, was a foreign forces liaison NCO in the International Cooperation Division, and Lt. Col. (Res.) Yitzhak Harosh, aged 68, from Jerusalem, was an officer in the Civil Administration's Reserve Unit 309. Their bravery and service in the face of adversity will never be forgotten.
