Truck Carrying Frozen French Fries Catches Fire on A2, Causing Major Traffic Disruptions

A severe truck accident on the A2 motorway near Braunschweig caused significant disruption and damage during the morning rush hour. The incident involved a Ford truck carrying a load of frozen French fries, which left the roadway and caught fire, leading to extensive road closures and traffic backups.

The fire destroyed the Ford and its cargo, resulting in an estimated total damage of approximately 500,000 euros. Around 150 square meters of road surface and five elements of the noise barrier wall were also damaged. The 34-year-old Ford truck driver managed to escape the vehicle unharmed.

The incident occurred at the North motorway junction in Braunschweig, heading towards Berlin. It led to major traffic disruptions, with the A2 backed up for over 15 kilometers during peak hours. Road closures were necessary for fire-fighting, recovery, and repair work, affecting both the A2 and its feeder roads from the A391. While the A2 and its feeder roads were reopened around 11.00 hrs, the parallel lane from the A2 coming from Hannover will remain closed until approximately Saturday evening.

The professional fire brigade of Braunschweig, along with other agencies, worked to extinguish the fire and clear the scene. The incident highlights the importance of road safety and the potential consequences of accidents on major highways. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and be prepared for potential delays, especially during peak travel times.
