Troublemaker Veera Issues Border Conflict Alerts
In a recent development, Veera Somkwamkid, the commander of Thailand's Second Army Region and the president of the People's Network Against Corruption (PNAC), has issued a warning about the discovery of new landmines along the tense and fragile Thailand-Cambodia border.
The border situation between the two countries has been volatile for years, with a long-standing dispute over non-demarcated border areas stretching over 800 kilometers. The conflict escalated sharply in May 2025 after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a gunfire exchange with Thai soldiers, leading to increased military deployments and skirmishes.
Veera's intention in raising these concerns is to urge Thai authorities to be aware of Cambodia's ultimate goal in stirring conflicts. He suggests that Thailand's military operations could lead to unintended consequences.
Meanwhile, Cambodian civilians have received orders to evacuate from the border area. The current border situation is complex, with both sides accusing each other of provocations. Cambodia has requested the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to resolve the dispute, and a ceasefire agreement was reached on July 28, 2025, under international mediation. However, distrust and nationalism continue to hinder a lasting peace.
Thailand is also reinforcing its border defenses, including building a strong fence at Ban Nong Chan to prevent Cambodian incursions. Veera advises that Thailand should focus on self-defense, collect evidence of warfare, and use satellite images to demonstrate who initiated hostilities, thereby preserving Thailand's credibility.
Veera Somkwamkid crossed into Cambodia from Thailand's eastern province of Sa Kaeo in December 2010. He was arrested, charged with espionage and illegal entry, and sentenced to eight years in jail. However, he was granted a royal pardon in July 2014 by King Norodom Sihamoni.
During his time in prison, Veera continued to voice his concerns about the border situation. He urged the government and military to remain united in the event of future conflicts. He also claimed that Cambodian troops have been reinforced at various flashpoints in areas of Prachin Buri, Surin, and Si Sa Ket provinces.
As the political landscape in Cambodia evolves, with Hun Sen aiming to establish a legacy for his son to inherit, rather than for political rivals, the future of the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute remains uncertain. Veera believes that Hun Sen, who is approaching the end of his career, cannot be trusted, having broken agreements in the past. He also stated that if defeated, Hun Sen has little to lose.
In conclusion, Veera Somkwamkid's warnings about potential landmines and his advice for Thailand to focus on self-defense serve as a reminder of the ongoing tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border. As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for both countries to strive for peace and mutual understanding.
