Tropicana Field reopens after hurricane repairs ahead of Rays' home opener
Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg has undergone major repairs after a year of inactivity. The 25,000-seat ballpark was closed for the 2025 MLB season due to hurricane damage. Officials have now confirmed that key upgrades, including a new playing surface, are complete.
The Tampa Bay Rays will return to the venue for their home opener on April 6 against the Chicago Cubs.
Hurricane Milton caused significant damage to the stadium, forcing its closure last season. Since then, crews have replaced the turf and addressed structural issues. The Rays still have three seasons remaining at Tropicana Field before any potential relocation.
Work is ongoing to refurbish both team clubhouses and upgrade luxury seating areas. Meanwhile, the newly installed roof has drawn criticism for its design. Fans have compared its multicoloured panels to a 'circus tent', though no official response from the team or players has been reported.
The stadium will reopen in time for the Rays' first home game of the season. While repairs have restored functionality, the roof's appearance remains a talking point. The team's lease at Tropicana Field runs until 2028, leaving time for further adjustments.
