Tropical Storm Wipha set to trigger heavy rainfall and powerful winds throughout Thailand from July 21st to 24th
Tropical Storm Wipha Impacts Thailand Beyond Landfall
Tropical Storm Wipha, which made landfall at Thai Binh, Vietnam on July 22, has weakened significantly but continues to impact Thailand through enhanced monsoon conditions.
As of July 23, Wipha had weakened from a tropical storm to a depression over Laos, and by July 24, it had further transitioned into an active low-pressure system. Despite moving away from Thailand, the storm continues to influence regional weather patterns.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has reported that following Wipha’s weakening, the strong southwest monsoon has persisted over Thailand and adjacent seas, causing heavy to very heavy rains primarily in Northern, Northeastern, Central, and Eastern regions. This has led to risks of flash floods and water overflow near foothills and lowlands.
Rough seas have also continued with wave heights in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand reaching 2 to 4 meters, especially during thundershowers, posing hazards to small boats and vessels.
The monsoon trough, coupled with residual low-pressure cells over Myanmar and Vietnam, has maintained unstable weather, causing localized heavy rains and strong winds in Thailand beyond July 24.
In summary, while Tropical Storm Wipha has dissipated, its effects on Thailand continue. Heavy rain, flood risks, and hazardous marine conditions persist in the days following the storm's landfall. Although direct storm impacts have ceased, secondary effects related to moisture and low-pressure systems continue to be felt.
Residents in affected areas are advised to remain cautious and follow the advice of local authorities. The TMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
- The weakening of Tropical Storm Wipha has not halted its influence on Thailand's weather, as the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) continues to report heavy rain and flooding risks due to the storm's impact on regional weather patterns.
- Despite Tropical Storm Wipha transitioning into an active low-pressure system and moving away from Thailand, weather-forecasting by the TMD indicates that unstable weather, causing localized heavy rains and strong winds, will continue to be felt beyond July 24.
