Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Alert Issued for North Carolina's Outer Banks, According to Hurricane Erin Tracker
Hurricane Erin, currently a Category 4 storm, is not forecast to hit land but is expected to impact the U.S. East Coast, causing widespread disruption.
More than 80,000 customers in Puerto Rico have already lost power due to the storm, and a flood watch remains in effect for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Officials in Dare County have issued a countywide state of emergency and a mandatory evacuation order for visitors and residents on Hatteras Island. The storm surge could be as high as 4 feet in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and coastal flood watches, tropical storm watches, and storm surge watches are in effect for the region. North Carolina has declared a state of emergency, anticipating storm surges up to 6 feet and 15-20 foot waves, with the peak danger occurring around mid to late August 2025 as Erin passes 150-250 miles east of the Outer Banks.
Life-threatening rip currents will be widespread along the East Coast all week and likely through the weekend. By Thursday, beaches in New Jersey and Long Island will see massive waves up to 12 feet. The largest cities on the U.S. East Coast most affected by Hurricane Erin, particularly from dangerous waves and rip currents, are New York City and coastal areas of North Carolina. New York beaches were closed from August 20 to August 22, 2025, due to anticipated life-threatening rip currents and waves up to three metres.
A high surf advisory is in effect from Savannah, Georgia, to Charleston, South Carolina, where waves could reach 6 feet. Tropical storm alerts have been issued in Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas, with up to 6 inches of rain and powerful wind gusts expected in these areas. In nearby Hyde County, Ocracoke Island is under a state of emergency with mandatory evacuations for residents and visitors.
