*[1] Hurricane Erick, the peak of the 2025 Eastern Pacific hurricane season’s first major hurricane, made landfall on Mexico's Pacific coast, near the western portion of Oaxaca, as a Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds of approximately 125 mph. The hurricane intensified to Category 4 status, reaching winds of 140 mph, earlier in the day.

[2] Although Erick was downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall, the hurricane still poses significant hazards, including life-threatening flooding, mudslides, storm surge, and dangerous surf for southwestern Mexico. Authorities issued a hurricane warning from Puerto Ángel to Acapulco and tropical weather alerts along the southern coast, expecting the storm surge to cause potentially hazardous coastal flooding and huge destructive waves near and east of the landfall area. The swells will continue to impact the southern Mexican coast, provoking life-threatening surf and rip currents at beaches.*

The floodwaters and mudslides could prove deadly, especially considering the rugged terrain inland that heightens the risk of runoff and landslides. Devastating memories of Hurricane Otis in 2023, the strongest hurricane that hit the area, linger, with its catastrophic fatalities and damage fresh in our minds. As the authorities and emergency teams stay alert to the threats of severe flooding and mudslides, Erick navigates inland and gradually weakens. Buckle up, folks! The storm's journey is far from over.
