Tropical Storm Dalila Inflicts Destruction on Acapulco
Tropical Storm Dalila Causes Significant Damage in Acapulco, Mexico
Tropical Storm Dalila has caused flooding, landslides, infrastructure damage, and power outages in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. The storm, which brought intense rainfall, strong winds, and high waves to the region, has left several municipalities in disarray.
According to the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), the rainfall levels in Acapulco have decreased significantly. Similarly, the wind speeds have also dropped, offering some relief to the affected areas. However, the cleanup efforts are ongoing in the hardest-hit areas such as Playa Revolcadero, located in the Zona Diamante of Acapulco.
Playa Revolcadero was one of the areas most affected by the storm. The collapse of five businesses, including four restaurants and a seafood shop, occurred here due to the storm. Elsewhere, some of the most affected areas include Misión del Mar and Luis Donaldo Colosio, where roads remain underwater.
The storm led to mudslides, road washouts, fallen trees, and roof collapses, leading to emergency protocols being activated. As a result, three residents were evacuated to temporary shelters due to the risk of landslides. No major casualties have been reported, but fishermen have suffered losses as five boats sank due to the rough seas.
The collapse of a bridge in the Omitlán region has disrupted transportation and access to nearby communities. Businesses in Acapulco have suffered economic losses estimated at approximately 750 million Mexican pesos (about US$39.4 million).
The flooding and damage to buildings and roads have disrupted services, causing power outages in the region. CONAGUA has advised local businesses to continue assessing the damage caused by Tropical Storm Dalila. They have also advised residents to remain vigilant for potential after-effects of the storm.
On a positive note, CONAGUA has reported that the water levels in the nearby rivers and streams are gradually returning to normal. The water levels in the Atoyac River have dropped, reducing the risk of flooding. Additionally, the waves in the Pacific Ocean have decreased in size due to the departure of Tropical Storm Dalila.
CONAGUA has stated that the storm has moved away from the coast of Guerrero. They continue to monitor the situation closely and advise local authorities to do the same. Despite the challenges, the resilient spirit of Acapulco remains unbroken as the city works towards recovery.
