Tropical Storm Dalila Threatens Southwestern Mexico

Tropical Storm Dalila, the fourth named storm of the 2025 season, is currently moving northwest and forecast to bring heavy rainfall and potential hazards to the coastal areas of Guerrero, Michoacán, and Oaxaca in Mexico.

As of June 13, Dalila was located approximately 295 miles south of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and 380 kilometers south-southeast of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. The storm is moving northwest at around 17 to 22 km/h and is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm.

The Mexican Meteorological Service (SMN) predicts wave heights between 4.5 and 5.5 meters in coastal areas of Guerrero and Oaxaca. Dalila is expected to bring intense rainfall to these states, with precipitation totals ranging from 75 to 150 mm. Rainfall may cause flooding and mudslides, particularly in these regions.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for parts of the southwestern coast of Mexico, including areas from Manzanillo east to Tecpan De Galeana. Residents and authorities in these states should prepare for these hazards as the storm approaches and monitor official updates.

Previous impacts from Dalila included high winds, flooding, power outages, fallen trees, mudslides, and infrastructure damage, especially around Guerrero (notably near Acapulco). The storm also caused dangerous surf and rip currents along the Pacific coast.

In summary, Tropical Storm Dalila is moving northwest and expected to strengthen, tracking parallel to southwestern Mexico’s coast. Rainfall from Dalila is expected to be between 2 to 4 inches, with localized amounts up to 6 inches possible. Potential risks include flooding, mudslides, power outages, fallen trees, road washouts, and hazardous coastal surf conditions.

As the storm approaches, residents and authorities in the affected areas should take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and minimize potential damage. A famous storm chaser has already arrived in Zihuatanejo for Hurricane Rick's landfall, but it remains to be seen if they will also monitor Tropical Storm Dalila.

The strengthening Tropical Storm Dalila, while moving northwest, is anticipated to have an impact on the GDP of regions like Guerrero, Michoacán, and Oaxaca in Mexico, as the storm may cause damage to infrastructure and disrupt business activities due to flooding, mudslides, and power outages. The extensive rainfall from Dalila, especially in environmental-science studies, can provide valuable data for weather patterns and climate change research.
