Tropical Depression emerging signals end to the unusual calm spell over the Atlantic; track the path of soon-to-be Hurricane Gabrielle

The Atlantic Ocean has been relatively calm this hurricane season, but that could change as Tropical Depression Seven is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by the weekend.

The system, which formed 1,185 miles from the Caribbean's northern Leeward Islands on Wednesday, had sustained winds of 35 mph at the time of formation. It is currently tracking to the west-northwest and is expected to become a tropical storm by Wednesday afternoon.

Most tropical activity in the Atlantic occurs from mid-August to mid-October, and this year has been no exception. However, the Atlantic has struggled to produce storms this year due to factors above the ocean, such as the tropical Atlantic being enveloped in dry, stable air and storm-killing winds in different levels of the atmosphere known as wind shear.

Sea surface temperatures across the basin are currently warmer than normal and have been that way for most of the summer, providing plenty of warm water to serve as jet fuel for tropical trouble.

Despite the potential for strengthening, this emerging hurricane tracker is no imminent threat to land for at least the next week. High pressure to the north of the system will steer the storm's west-northwest path in the next few days.

Another area of showers and storms is emerging from Africa and could develop into another tropical hurricane tracker. The seventh tropical storm of the season typically forms by September 3, but this storm is about two weeks late.

The predicted name of the hurricane that will develop from Tropical Depression Seven in 2025 is not explicitly stated in the available search results. However, the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has seen seven tropical cyclones, all named storms, with Tropical Depression Seven forming around mid-September.

The formation of Tropical Depression Seven comes during prime time for tropical trouble, but 2021 has been relatively quiet so far. Only one of the season's six tropical storms through August, Hurricane Erin, has become a hurricane. Hurricane Erin was a frightening peek into a new world order of how strong Atlantic storms are becoming as the planet warms.

As Tropical Depression Seven strengthens, high surf and dangerous rip currents will be the main impacts in the eastern Caribbean, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It is important for residents in these areas to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the hurricane milton tracker develops.
