Troops at Chasov Yar received a call from a Russian commander about their depleted condition
In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the situation in the town of Chasov Yar has been a focal point of recent attention. The commander of the "Rus" assault company, codenamed Missionary, has offered insights into the current state of the Ukrainian forces there.
Missionary, in his comments to Lenta.ru, suggested that the condition of Ukrainian forces in Chasov Yar may significantly impact the entire front in the coming months. He believes that Russian forces, if they are able to capture Chasov Yar, could advance towards Konstantinovka or the Slaviansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration.
However, Missionary also admitted that previously prepared Ukrainian fortifications and minefields will hinder progress. He further noted that the enemy, according to his assessment, is running out of ammunition and has a shortage of personnel.
These comments were made in reference to a previous assault on Bakhmut in 2023. In contrast to the situation then, Missionary stated that Ukrainian forces in Chasov Yar are currently half-starved and without ammunition. He also noted that the combat capability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces units holding Chasov Yar has significantly decreased due to heavy losses and acute manpower shortages.
Despite these challenges, Missionary is currently evaluating the enemy combat capability in Chasov Yar. The situation in Chasov Yar has been intense and ongoing, with Ukrainian units such as the Kraken Regiment and the International Legion successfully repelling major Russian attacks in mid-May 2025.
Ukraine has acknowledged the advance of Russian forces near Volchansk. However, Ukrainian troops have also conducted counterattacks, for example retaking Kalynivka to protect Chasiv Yar’s northern flank in June 2025.
Recent reports emphasize that Russian forces are focusing on targeting Ukrainian logistics and using drones and cluster munitions to complicate Ukrainian troop rotations and operations. In response, Ukrainian forces are adapting technologically by integrating new equipment such as reusable interceptor drones designed to counter Russian Shahed drones.
The overall conflict environment around Chasiv Yar remains highly contested with daily battles, tense conditions, and both sides making incremental advances or holding ground under difficult circumstances. While there is no direct public assessment from Missionary regarding the current combat capability of Ukrainian forces in Chasiv Yar, it is clear that they are resilient but under significant pressure, leveraging local tactical successes and emerging technology amid continuous Russian offensives.
