Durham University Boat Club Achieves Clean Sweep at BUCS Regatta 2023

Durham University Boat Club (DUBC) made history by winning the Victor Ludorum trophies for women's, men's, and overall categories at the BUCS Regatta 2023, marking a significant milestone in their 2023 rowing season[1].

The BUCS Regatta, a major British university rowing competition held annually over a 2 km course, took place at Holme Pierrepont during the May Day weekend. Points are awarded for finishing places in finals, with higher points for championship events and larger boats. The overall Victor Ludorum award goes to the university scoring the most points across all events, with separate trophies also awarded to the top men's and women's teams[1].

Durham’s 2023 performance followed years of strong competition, as the club historically dominated the BUCS Regatta, winning multiple Victor Ludorum titles previously and reclaiming comprehensive victory in 2023 by winning all three — women's, men’s, and overall trophies, demonstrating their peak form and depth across disciplines that season[1].

The journey to this victory began on April 29, 2023, when Durham University Boat Club attended the BUCS Regatta[2]. On Day 1, all crews and individuals from DUBC performed exceptionally well, with the MCh8+ and WCh2- securing silver medals, while the LwInt2- and Mint2- crews won gold and silver medals in their respective races[3].

On Day 2, Durham University Boat Club continued to achieve, with crews adding to the medal tally. The LwCh2x, a crew from Durham University Boat Club, produced one of their season best performances in the Lightweight Women's Double Sculls, earning them the gold medal[4]. The highlights of Day 2 came through the women's crews as WIntLw1x and WChLw4 landed gold medals in their respective races[5].

Furthermore, WCh4+ crew from DUBC won a gold medal in their race, while WCh2x crew secured a silver medal[3]. The Mint2- crews from DUBC won gold and bronze medals in their races, and WCh8+, MCh4-, MCh4+, and WChLw1x picked up bronze medals on Day 2[6].

This clean sweep victory stands out among Durham’s notable rowing achievements in the recent decade and highlights their status as one of the leading university rowing programs in the UK[1]. Notably, this marks the second Victor Ludorum that Durham University Boat Club has won this season (at BUCS Head of The River)[7].

With the success at the BUCS Regatta, Durham University Boat Club is now focusing on the Henley Royal Regatta, aiming to continue their winning streak in the upcoming events.
