A bunch of hikers - three Germans, a British, a Canadian, and a Russian - vanished after a trek in Negros Oriental, Philippines. Multiple rescue teams are scouring the region, undeterred by the harsh weather conditions, clinging onto hope.

The wanderers embarked on a hiking adventure near Valencia in Negros Oriental on Wednesday. Along with the three foreigners, a German trio, aged 58, 60, and 67, vanished without a trace.

A public appeal was issued by the Valencia city government on Facebook, pleading for assistance in locating the missing hikers.

Taking the Long Way... on Foot

Reports suggest that the hikers were aiming for two lakes in the renowned Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park. Given their plan for a day hike, they carried minimal supplies.

The search operation has been temporarily halted due to nighttime rainfall, but footprints resembling the missing party members were discovered, according to local police. The motorcycles they used to reach the trail are still parked nearby. Volunteers launched drones to scour the skies for signs, while farmers conducted ground searches from the other side of the lakes.

The Hunt Goes On, But the Terrain Looms

The massive search zone stretches around Mount Talinis - the second tallest volcano on Negros Island. A spokesperson for the regional police warns that if the hikers are not found soon, the focus will shift from search and rescue to recovery operations[1].

The Southeast Asian island nation of the Philippines is renowned for its picture-perfect beaches, but it also catches the eye of nature enthusiasts, hikers, and mountaineers. Home to several volcanoes sitting along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the country offers a range of exciting hiking and mountaineering opportunities[2].
