The trial of a former high-ranking officer from the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA) was put on hold this Tuesday. The officer, now in his 60s, did not show up for his hearing at the Tiergarten district court. As per the judge presiding over the case, they will explore whether the accused's medical certificate granted him an exemption from attendance. A new court date has yet to be announced.

The individual, who has since been placed on suspension, faces charges of misappropriation and breach of trust. Reportedly, he diverted approximately 73,000 euros for personal use. Serving as the logistics provider for undercover operations within the Berlin police department, he took advantage of his position and diverted funds for his own benefit. The prosecution suggested his financial predicament, stemming from a gambling addiction, as a possible motivation.

The charges against him involve 16 alleged instances, spanning from September 2017 through August 2021. The accusations include money misappropriation in 15 instances and the theft of a scooter in another. Internal policing checks eventually led to the unearthing of these misdeeds.

The investigation leading to the accused officer's trial began in May 2022, when the LKA became aware of potential misconduct within its ranks. The proceedings started near the end of that month, with the officer entering a "plea of no guilt" upon his arrest. During the trial, witnesses testified that the accused had often requested and received large sums of money for various expenses, claiming they were related to logistics for undercover operations. Financial records, including bank statements and receipts, were submitted as evidence, proving the misappropriation of funds. The former LKA officer is also alleged to have misused police vehicles and equipment. The investigation has gone on to uncover similar cases of embezzlement within the LKA, with three other officers also under suspicion, including the current head of logistics for the Berlin police department.
