Argentine Judge Recuses Herself From Maradona Trial Over Conflict of Interest

In a developing turn of events, Judge Julieta Makintach has stepped down from the ongoing trial related to the death of revered football legend, Diego Maradona, due to allegations of conflict of interest. The move comes after Makintach was accused of secretly filming a TV documentary about the case without the knowledge or approval of her colleagues.

Debates over her bias have intensified with lawyers for the defendants, the plaintiffs, and the prosecution repeatedly demanding her removal. There are also suspicions that Makintach, despite her denials, allowed unauthorized filming in the courtroom during the Maradona trial.

Coincidentally, footage has been circulated in Argentine media outlets, showing Makintach apparently being interviewed by a camera crew on the day prior to the start of the trial.

Presiding Judge Maximiliano Savarino of San Isidro, north of Buenos Aires, ordered Makintach's removal from the case on Tuesday, citing her actions as severely compromising her impartiality. The court has postponed upcoming trial dates, with a decision set for Thursday on whether Makintach can be replaced or if the trial needs to be restarted with three new judges.

Maradona's death, which occurred on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 due to a heart attack and pulmonary edema, has been a subject of investigation. The prosecution alleges that Maradona's medical team neglected him, leading to his eventual demise. His daughter, Gianinna, accused the defendants of housing her father in an isolating, unappealing environment, prioritizing payment over his well-being.

The trial in San Isidro, a suburb of Buenos Aires, commenced on March 11 and has held two sessions per week since then. If convicted, the seven defendants face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years. The core allegations against the medical team remain unchanged, but the judicial process is now reset, pending the selection of new judges.
