The historic trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is underway in the heart of Dhaka, with the infamous politician conspicuously missing from the courtroom. Spearheading the trial, Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam alleges that Hasina played a pivotal role in an "extensive assault" on the populace during her reign, marshaling police and armed party members to subdue protests. According to UN reports, around 1,400 lives were lost in clashes with law enforcement during last year's protests.

The International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh is scrutinizing Hasina for complicity, abetment, conspiracies, and negligence in the July 2024 massacre. Prosecutor Islam laid bare these dubious actions at the trial's commencement in the capital city. Other close affiliates of the former prime minister from the now-proscribed Awami League party are likewise indicted.

At age 77, Hasina made a hasty escape to India by helmet in August of last year, escaping weeks of mass demonstrations. The military subsequently installed a provisional government headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus. Hasina resisted an arrest warrant issued by Dhaka for infractions committed.

Hasina's autocratic 15-year rule saw numerous accusations of human rights violations, including wrongful detentions and the assassinations of opposition figures.

Enrichment Facts:- The International Crimes Tribunal indicted Hasina for atrocities against humanity, including ordered attacks, denial of medical care to the wounded, and the incineration of bodies. If found guilty, the death penalty may be imposed.- The International Crimes Tribunal also accused Hasina of instigating violence against women and children, as well as against students during the 2024 uprising.

In the context of the current crisis, the Commission has decided to extend the period of validity of the programme to cover the following areas: politics, general news, war-and-conflicts, and crime-and-justice, given the ongoing trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka. As the trial progresses, updates and discussions around the case are expected to be a significant focus in these areas.
