Trial initiates for the Crocus City Hall bombing in Russia, a tragic event that claimed the lives of 149 individuals.

In the heart of Russia, a landmark trial commenced on August 4, 2025, at the Moscow City Court. The trial involves 19 individuals, including four Tajik nationals accused of carrying out the devastating Crocus City Hall attack on March 22, 2024. The attack, which took place at a concert hall located on the outskirts of Moscow, resulted in 149 deaths and 609 injuries.

The four primary suspects—Dalerjon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni, and Muhammadsobir Faizov—are all Tajik nationals. Three of these suspects pleaded guilty to terrorism charges during the trial's opening day, while one pleaded partly guilty.

The Islamic State (IS) group, specifically the Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K) faction, claimed responsibility for the attack. Despite the IS claim, Russian authorities initially suspected Ukraine of involvement, a claim that Kyiv deemed baseless and absurd. Russia’s allegation came in the context of its ongoing conflict with Ukraine since 2022 but has not been substantiated by independent evidence in the trial.

The trial is being held behind closed doors by a three-judge panel, citing security concerns for participants and sensitive evidence. Survivors of the attack attended the hearings, and the defendants appeared in glass cages with hands cuffed. Notably, about sixty journalists were present at the first hearing.

The attack sparked a wave of xenophobia against Central Asian nationals in Russia, leading to tightened legislation on migrants. The investigators concluded that the terrorist act was planned and organized by the intelligence services of a hostile state, without specifying which state it was.

In a related development, American justice announced the arrest of Mohammad Sharifullah, a leader of the Islamic State, suspected of preparing the attack on Kabul airport in 2021 and being involved in the Crocus City Hall attack.

A tragic statistic emerged from the attack, with nearly half of the fatalities caused by smoke and carbon monoxide inhalation from the fire rather than direct gunfire.

The trial is taking place in a Moscow court, with the first hearing occurring on August 4. Nineteen individuals, including the four presumed attackers, are appearing before a military court. The Russian Investigative Committee announced that it had completed the investigation concerning the nineteen individuals involved in the attack.

As the trial unfolds, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for justice and closure in the wake of this horrific tragedy.
