The Kuban region in Russia is currently battling an infestation of the emerald ash borer, a destructive pest that threatens the region's forests. According to recent reports, the infested areas are scheduled to be logged and utilized by 2026 to prevent the spread of the pest.

The emerald ash borer, known for causing healthy trees to wither within two to three years, has been found in eight municipalities in the Kuban region: Shcherbinovsky, Eisky, Staromininsky, Kushchevsky, Leninsky, Krylovsky, Pavlovsky, and Kanevsky districts. As of August 2024, the total area affected by the pest in Russia, including the Kuban region, was around 5.2 million hectares, according to RIA Novosti.

To combat the infestation, experts recommend cutting down infected trees and destroying those within a 100-meter radius of the infestation. This drastic measure is aimed at curbing the pest's spread.

In response to the crisis, the environmental campaign "Save the Forest" has been launched in the Kuban region. The campaign, which is being organised on various social media platforms such as VKontakte, Одноклассники, Telegram, Viber, and WhatsApp, aims to address the infestation of the emerald ash borer.

Notable figures associated with the campaign include Anastasia Klyueva. The campaign has also gained traction with the hashtag #kubansforests.

The campaign comes after the infested areas in the Krasnodar Krai region, where the large-scale infestation is located, were scheduled to be logged and utilized by 2026 to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer. The Krasnodar Krai region is one of the 12 regions in Russia affected by the pest as of August 2024, along with the Rostov region.

As the battle against the emerald ash borer continues, the campaign "Save the Forest" serves as a beacon of hope for the preservation of the Kuban region's forests.
