Travis Etienne Jr.'s blockbuster deal leaves Alvin Kamara's future in doubt
The New Orleans Saints have signed running back Travis Etienne Jr. to a four-year, £52 million deal. His arrival from the Jacksonville Jaguars has sparked speculation about the future of Alvin Kamara, the team's long-time starter. Etienne, a Louisiana native, returns home after five seasons in Florida—but his signing may push Kamara out of the picture.
Etienne has made clear his ambition to lead the Saints' backfield. His arrival puts Kamara's role in doubt, as the team may prefer a fresher, younger option. Kamara, a five-time Pro Bowler, has struggled in recent years with injuries, suspensions, and declining production.
Kamara's best season under the current regime came in 2023, when he rushed for 1,100 yards and seven touchdowns. But his performance in Pro Bowls since then tells a different story. His output dropped from 60 yards and a touchdown in 2021 to just 22 yards in 2025. Injuries played a part—a hamstring issue in 2023-24 and an MCL sprain in 2022, which limited him to 471 yards that season. A suspension for violating the NFL's conduct policy in late 2024 further disrupted his rhythm. On top of that, Kamara's fumbles increased to eight in 2024, while his receiving role shrank under head coach Kellen Moore. His catches fell from 80 in 2023 to 45 in 2025 as the Saints shifted to a run-heavy offence. Moore has remained vague about Kamara's future, refusing to confirm his place on the roster. Financially, the Saints restructured Kamara's contract earlier this year to create cap flexibility. Cutting him would still leave significant dead money, but the move would free up space if the team decides to part ways. Complicating matters, Kamara has repeatedly stated he would rather retire than play for another franchise. This stance could make trade discussions difficult, leaving New Orleans with few options.
Etienne's signing gives the Saints a new direction at running back. Kamara's contract, injuries, and reduced role suggest his time in New Orleans may be ending. The team now faces a decision: keep a declining veteran or move forward with a younger, homegrown replacement.
