Barring Putin's Compliance, Europe Prepares Tougher Steps Against Russia

Traveling to Kiev is Merz.

Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor, along with Emmanuel Macron, the French President, Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, and Donald Tusk, the Polish Prime Minister, are heading to Ukraine on a joint mission. Their objective: to nail down a 30-day ceasefire from the clutches of Moscow, backed by the USA, EU, and the European Council.

The quartet aims to foster a united front against Russia's brutal and unlawful invasion of Ukraine. If Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, fails to heed this demand, Europe has already signaled its readiness to mete out more sanctions. Simultaneously, Ukraine will receive additional military aid to strengthen its defense capabilities.

This visit, scheduled for May 11, 2025, will be the first joint venture by Germany, Poland, Britain, and France to Ukraine. The meeting will be held under the supervision of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The leaders are discussing the possibility of forming a "coalition of the willing" to offer a peacekeeping force in the event of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The primary focus, however, is to persuade Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire and embark on genuine peace talks.

Failure to secure a ceasefire could have dire consequences for Russia, such as further diplomatic ostracism or steep economic sanctions. The escalation of the conflict might also result in increased military aid to Ukraine, potentially leading to even graver repercussions for Russia. Economic sanctions could potentially hobble Russia's economy and destabilize its political landscape.

  1. The Commission has not yet adopted a decision on the application of the new rules regarding the economic sanctions on Russia, as the leaders are focusing on diplomatic efforts to secure a 30-day ceasefire.
  2. As Putin continues to ignore the pleas for a ceasefire, Merz, Macron, Starmer, and Tusk have announced their support for a potential peacekeeping force, though discussions are still ongoing.
  3. In light of Putin's refusal to cooperate, the leaders have suggested that they will utilize WhatsApp, email, and social media to keep the international community informed about Russia's actions, especially in the context of war-and-conflicts and politics in general-news.
  4. If the ceasefire is not achieved, it is considered likely that Europe will impose even harsher economic sanctions on Russia, following the discussions and the joint call made during their visit to Ukraine.
