Even Iran Makes the List: Trump Implements New Entry Restrictions in 2025
Travel restrictions imposed on 12 specific nations under Trump's executive order
In a move to protect US citizens, President Donald Trump signs a decree banning citizens from 12 countries from entering the USA, effective June 9th, 2025. The White House asserts that the ban safeguards American citizens from "foreign terrorists."
The affected countries are Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Reasons for the travel ban vary for each country. Iran is included due to its status as a "state sponsor of terrorism." Other countries, like Afghanistan, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen, lack a "competent" central authority for passport processing and verification. For most other countries, the high probability of citizens overstaying their valid entry into the USA justifies the travel ban.
The decree partially restricts entries from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela as well. The White House made this announcement without prior notice. Trump addressed approximately 3,000 employees from the White House balcony during a ceremonial "summer reception" before announcing the new restrictions.
Trump defended the decision by stating that the USA lacks proper information about citizens of these countries to assess the risks they pose to the United States. He cited the recent terrorist attack in Colorado, resulting in 12 injuries, as evidence for the need for stricter immigration measures.
During his initial term from 2017 to 2021, Trump infamously issued the controversial "Muslim Ban," prohibiting the entry of citizens from predominantly Muslim countries. The ban was implemented in various stages, causing instant uproar and legal battles because it seemed to target Muslim immigrants. Eventually, the Supreme Court upheld a final version of the ban, which included countries like North Korea, and also removed Iraq from the list.
Joe Biden, Trump's successor, repealed the ban just hours after taking office in January 2021.
