Berlin's Garbage Crisis: BSR Resumes Collection on Monday

Garbage Collection Resumes by BSR, Effective from Next Weekday - Trash collection by BSR has been postponed until Monday.

Hey there!

It's quite a mess in Berlin right now, ain't it? With BSR, the municipal waste management company, tossing their tools due to a strike, our city streets are turning into a sea of trash. But fear not, there's a light at the end of the tunnel... or, more accurately, on Monday.

Yep, you heard it right! The BSR spokesperson confirmed that despite the current chaos, there won't be any catch-up garbage collections until the next regular collection date, which happens to be... you guessed it, next week.

The Mounting Mounds of Trash

So, if you were wondering how much waste we're talking about here, it's estimated to be around 12,000 tons. For context, that's roughly equivalent to 2,400 double-decker buses filled to the brim with garbage! Yikes! Normally, BSR clears around 3,000 tons of household waste a day, leaving quite the void during the strike.

Once the strike is over, BSRwill start chipping away at this colossal pile, although it might take some time to clean up entirely. They appreciate your patience, understandably so. With around 1,300 employees using 350 garbage trucks for their collection efforts, it's quite a task ahead.

A Recycling Center Shutdown

The striking workers represented by the Verdi union have also caused disruptions at various BSR facilities, such as the waste incineration plant in Ruhleben, sorting facilities, street cleaning, and recycling centers. As a result, all 14 BSR recycling centers will also be closed tomorrow (Saturday).

So there you have it. Hang in there, Berliners! In the grand scheme of things, a few days of extra trash isn't the end of the world, but it sure does make for an unpleasant trip to the park. Keep your fingers crossed for a swift resolution to the ongoing labor dispute and a cleaner city soon!

  • During the strike, vocational training for BSR employees has been temporarily halted, potentially disrupting the company's long-term plans for skill development.
  • In an attempt to minimize waste accumulation during the BSR strike, residents are encouraged to use recycling centers on days other than Saturday, as all 14 BSR recycling centers will be closed on Saturday due to the strike's impact on facilities and operations.
