Transition Government Should Assume Responsibility for Executing July Charter, Says Khelafat Majlis

In a significant display of unity, seven Islamic parties gathered in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on September 18, led by Ahmad Abdul Quader, the Secretary General of Khelafat Majlis. The chief guest at the protest rally, Quader spoke passionately about the urgent need for reforms and the implementation of the July Charter.

Quader, as the chief guest, demanded immediate action to hold PR-based elections in the upper house, provide legal backing for the July Charter, make judicial proceedings visible, suspend the political activities of fascist groups and their collaborators, and ensure the appointment of religious teachers in primary schools.

The Khelafat Majlis leader expressed concerns about conspiracies to leave several key reform measures for the next elected government, warning that without full implementation of reforms, there is public doubt about the effectiveness of future elected authorities in carrying them out. He added that the interim government must provide a legal basis for the enforcement of the July National Charter.

Jamaat, one of the parties present at the rally, criticized the government for issuing a gazette notification appointing music and arts teachers instead of religious teachers. This decision, according to Quader, has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among the majority of the population.

Islami Andolan, another party present, stated they are ready to drop the demand for PR in the elections only if the people reject it in a referendum. The party leaders, including from Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, and Khelafat Majlis, were present at the gathering, emphasising the common demands such as implementing the July Charter, introducing the PR system, and ensuring a level playing field for a free, fair, and acceptable election.

However, the administration and law enforcement have yet to make the desired progress to ensure a truly free and fair election. Ahmad Abdul Quader urged the interim government to take responsibility for implementing the July Charter, stating that it is their responsibility to ensure the trial of fascists, necessary reforms, and free and fair elections.

The decision to appoint music and arts teachers has not been met with approval by all parties. The protest rally, therefore, serves as a call for action, urging the government to prioritise the demands of the people and work towards a more inclusive and just society. Notable among the participants was Kamal Hossain, a party leader who joined the rally in Dhaka, calling for the immediate implementation of the July Charter and the holding of the 13th national parliamentary elections based on the Charter.
