Revamping Opera Square in Munich for a Greener Experience 🌳
The heart of Munich, Max-Joseph-Plaza, is currently undergoing a makeover! Instead of the current barren stone and tarmac expanse, you can expect lush greenery, walking paths, shade-providing plants, and cozy seating areas soon. Nestled in front of the Bavarian State Opera, this revamped plaza aims to be an inviting escape for the whole of Munich, a space to unwind and rejuvenate in the city center.
According to a plan finalized in late April by the city council, this transformation is a temporary solution, leading up to a full-scale refurbishment of the square in a few years. Drawing inspiration from historical blueprints from Leo von Klenze’s time, who designed the square at the start of the 19th century, the revamped Max-Joseph-Plaza seeks to hark back to its classical roots.
Despite its rich heritage, the area in front of the opera building and Munich Residenz has transformed into a stone-cold, tarmac-laden wasteland, primarily used as an entrance to the underground garage underneath the opera house's staircase. The provisional plan intends to keep this entrance as minimal as possible.
Slated for completion in December 2025, the city council has allocated a budget of 3.9 million euros for the transformation. The revamped plaza will showcase elements reminiscent of its Bavarian heritage, faithfully recalling Leo von Klenze’s original designs. Expect a serene oasis just before the Bavarian State Opera, welcoming locals and tourists alike.
