Don Coscarelli's 'Phiction' Delves Deeper into the Phantasm Universe

Don Coscarelli, the acclaimed director behind Phantasm I-IV, Bubba Ho-Tep, The Beastmaster, and John Dies at the End, has penned a book of short stories called Phiction, exploring "tales from the world of Phantasm." This new release expands the mythology of Coscarelli's iconic horror franchise, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year.

Phiction focuses on characters from the Phantasm world, delving deeper into the backstories of key figures like Mike, Jody, and the enigmatic Tall Man. By weaving fiction around these characters, the book adds layers to the eerie lore of the Phantasm dimension, going beyond what was shown on screen.

The Phantasm universe originated from Coscarelli’s childhood nightmare about a flying chrome sphere that drills into brains, yielding a mix of horror, cosmic mystery, and surreal storytelling. The original film and its sequels are known for blending dream logic with horror tropes, and Phiction continues this tradition by exploring tales that complement and expand this unique mythos.

Reggie Bannister, the actor who plays Reggie in the Phantasm series, has read and enjoyed the story about Reggie in the book. The book also boasts a cover and illustrations created by Coscarelli's longtime collaborator Aaron Lea.

As for future projects, Coscarelli is working on a TV series proposal with writer Adair Cole. He has also hinted at the possibility of a Phiction part two. The collectible hardcover version of Phiction is already sold out, but the paperback and Kindle versions will be available for purchase on Amazon starting April 30.

Coscarelli offers advice to up-and-coming horror creators, urging them to work in a supportive group of friends for filmmaking projects. He remains optimistic about the future of independent filmmaking, believing that a young filmmaker could distribute a horror movie on YouTube and make money from it. However, he has stated in the introduction to the book that he does not plan to make another Phantasm movie.

Phantasm news and updates can be found on the Phantasm website, while the series is available for streaming on various platforms including Freevee, Peacock, Tubi, Pluto TV, and Plex.
