Transformed Vision: A Wealthy, Enigmatic Sight
In the heart of Berlin, at the Volksbühne, Linienstr. 227, Mitte, a unique artistic experience is unfolding. From July 3-4, Susanne Kennedy and Markus Selg's production, THE WORK, is playing with English with German surtitles.
THE WORK is a part of a trilogy by Kennedy and Selg, following JESSICA - an Incarnation and ANGELA (a strange loop). This production showcases a 15-year span of Markus Selg's multidisciplinary art, integrating live performance by actors, a complex sound design and soundtrack, video art, detailed costume design, and lighting to create a unified artistic experience.
The performance lacks a traditional narrative structure but makes up for it with its atmospheric richness. The journey in THE WORK is described as strange and fascinating as the character Xenia stages a retrospective of her work and life, replaying pivotal moments. The actors in THE WORK wear uncanny masks, adding to the eerie atmosphere of the production.
Kennedy and Selg's work in THE WORK creates an intriguing tension between observing the retrospective and attending to the actors. The looping construction ensures that the audience witnesses every scene. As the production reaches its climax, dread turns gentle by Xenia's end, with the lines "We love you. You did the work, and that's what counts."
The theatrical vision of Kennedy and Selg, as displayed in THE WORK, invites the audience to cross the theatre's border and inhabit the stage. This immersive production leaves the audience excited about the future work of Markus Selg and Susanne Kennedy.
Susanne Kennedy and Markus Selg are multidisciplinary artists working collaboratively, with Kennedy primarily as a theatre director and writer and Selg as a visual artist and stage designer. Their partnership combines theatre, visual art, sound, and video to create immersive, interdisciplinary productions.
Kennedy studied theatre studies in Germany and France and completed a directing degree in Amsterdam in 2005. Together with Selg, she has developed innovative stage works, often incorporating text, performance, and visual art. Selg contributes notably to concept and stage design, as well as video design, complementing Kennedy's direction and dramaturgy.
In terms of upcoming works, Kennedy and Selg are also involved in the 2025–26 production of Wagner's Parsifal, noted for its visually stunning and ritualistic dimension. This production is staged by Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and has drawn attention for its integration of ritual and multimedia elements.
THE WORK received a rating of ★★★★, a testament to the success of Kennedy and Selg's unique and captivating style. Don't miss this opportunity to experience their artistry firsthand.
